Millen father and son attack Pikes Peak in Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Drivers Rhys Millen and former Pikes Peak world record holder Rod Millen will compete in both the unlimited and time attack production 2WD classes
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., 05/25/2011
Hyundai, Red Bull, and Rhys Millen Racing will attempt to set multiple world records at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill climb in June. Rhys Millen will compete in the unlimited class with the Hyundai-powered RMR PM580 purpose-built tube-framed race car, while Rhys’ father, Rod Millen, will compete in the 2WD production class with the Genesis Coupe race car. Both race cars use production engine blocks, heads, valvetrain from the Hyundai-developed Lambda V6 engine family as core building blocks for their phenomenal race-worthy performance and durability.
Rhys formerly set a world record in the Genesis Coupe for the production-based 2WD class in 2009. The hill climb course was revised with significant increases in the ratio of tarmac to dirt for 2010, effectively reducing the time to the summit for all competitors. “Breaking into the 9’s has been a dream of mine for the last 10 years,” said Rhys Millen, professional race driver and founder of Rhys Millen Racing. “With the precise technical adjustments we made to the PM580 this year, coupled with the increase in tarmac near the course summit, the prospect of another world record is better than ever. We plan on being the fastest car up the hill and getting the world record back in the family name, the Millen name.”

MILLEN FATHER AND SON EFFORT
For 2011, Rod Millen will join Rhys for the time attack up Pikes Peak in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe developed by Rhys Millen Racing. Rod will compete in the production-based 2WD class, the same class world record held by Rhys in the Genesis Coupe only two years ago.
“I didn’t have to look far for the caliber of driver I wanted for the Genesis” said Rhys. “Over the Christmas holiday, while exchanging gifts, I asked my father what he thought about taking the Genesis Coupe to the summit once again. His smile told me all I needed to know.” Rod Millen is also a former Pikes Peak world record holder of some 13 years, from 1994 to 2007. His former world record time was 10:04.06; but technology improvements and course changes that include an increase in the ratio of tarmac to dirt now make finishes in the 9-minute realm possible. “The possibility of world records in two unique classes makes my father and I really excited about the team’s prospects for this year,” said Rhys.

RMR HYUNDAI PM580 UNLIMITED CLASS TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS
For 2011, the team has made a number of technical improvements to the PM580 racecar to further maximize its world-beating potential. The differential type was changed from a gear-driven torsen type to a clutch-plate type, resulting in more consistent transitional characteristics accelerating out of corners. The power steering unit was replaced by an OEM Hyundai Sonata motor-driven unit that provides the ideal amount of boost and precision. Transmission calibrations were refined with new sensors and a tuned software package. Dampers were dynographed to be more precisely matched to final spring rates for optimal precision and control. The tires, provided by Hankook, have larger contact patches and offer a softer racing compound appropriate for the increased tarmac on the course. Finally, numerous aerodynamic improvements were made to produce an even corner-balancing effect at speed, with a new front splitter, rear wing, and optimized intercooler scoop.

THE COURSE
Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motorsports race in America, second only to the Indianapolis 500, and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs. First run in 1916, this year marks the 89th running of the thrilling “Race to the Clouds.” The race is run on a course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the oxygen-starved 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak. As drivers and their race cars approach the summit, the steady reduction in oxygen density reduces engine power potential and can dull critical driver reflexes. The thin air continues to push man and machine to their limits with every turn of the course. It is estimated the oxygen levels at the summit reduce engine power up to 30 percent, making powerful forced induction technology critical for the quickest competitors. Further, Pikes Peak is a natural closed course racing circuit, with wind, weather and terrain changing constantly, elevating required skill and experience levels and making the final outcome uncertain until the last competitor crosses the checkered flag.

RHYS MILLEN
With more than 17 years of racing experience, Rhys Millen has established himself as one of the premier rally and drifting drivers in North America. Born in New Zealand in 1972, Rhys is the son of famed rally and off-road racer Rod Millen. Rhys joined Rod in the U.S. as a teenager and soon afterwards established himself as a racer by taking first place at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the Open Division and winning Rookie of the Year. He won the Formula Drift championship in 2005 and the Red Bull Drifting World Championship in 2008.
Millen and his team are an ideal match to help bolster Hyundai’s increasing motorsports effort with the Genesis Coupe and Veloster. Millen’s driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a 2009 Pikes Peak world record and an outrageous New Year’s Eve Las Vegas truck flip. As always, Millen’s success in the driver’s seat is fully supported by a team of talented engineers, technicians and fabricators that know how to maximize every nuance of a world class race car.

2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA EARNS IIHS “TOP SAFETY PICK”

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 05/26/2011

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2011 Hyundai Elantra a “TOP SAFETY PICK”— achieving the highest rating of “Good” in all crash test categories including front, side, rollover and rear crash protection.  Additionally, in order to be considered for an IIHS “TOP SAFETY PICK,” a vehicle must also feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which Elantra has offered since 2007.
IIHS recently evaluated 13 small cars with Elantra being one of the six to be named a “TOP SAFETY PICK.”  The 2011 Elantra, with a standard 40 mpg highway fuel economy rating, demonstrates that vehicles don’t have to compromise efficiency for safety.
“Elantra safety has improved tremendously over the years with the vehicle now earning IIHS’ top safety distinction,” said David Zuby, the IIHS’ chief research officer. “The big things the automakers have done to improve crashworthiness are designing better front crush zones to manage crash energy, stronger occupant compartments to limit intrusion, and stronger roofs to better protect people in rollovers.”
The 2011 Elantra takes compact car safety to the next level with the introduction of Vehicle Stability Management (VSM). Similar to the one found in the Hyundai Equus, VSM optimally manages ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS). Elantra features six airbags—including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbag.
The Elantra also features a state-of-the-art braking package including four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), to automatically adjust the braking force to front and rear axles based on vehicle loading conditions.
“Hyundai is committed to applying the most effective life-saving vehicle technologies and the all-new Elantra is no exception,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The 40 mpg highway 2011 Elantra is proving that compact cars can be fuel efficient while offering tremendous safety.”

HYUNDAI SONATA, ELANTRA AND GENESIS TOP AUTOPACIFIC VEHICLE SATISFACTION AWARDS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 05/19/2011
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata, the all-new 2011 Elantra and the Genesis sedan topped their respective categories in the 2011 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards.  Sonata, a two-time winner and the recipient of the AutoPacific President’s Award, took home the honor in the “Premium Mid-Size Car” segment.  The new Elantra earned the highest score in the “Compact Car” class and the Genesis took the award in the “Aspirational Luxury Car” segment for the third year in a row.
AutoPacific's Vehicle Satisfaction Award measures how satisfied an owner is with his/her new vehicle. The study summarizes the results of over 68,000 new vehicle owners.
“Having Hyundai win three categories in AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Awards demonstrates our continued commitment to excellence in quality, value and design for all of the vehicles in the Hyundai lineup,” said Scott Margason, director of product planning, Hyundai Motor America.  “These awards are an important indicator that we’ve hit the mark when it comes to pleasing our buyers – a very encouraging sign as we bring new models like the 2012 Veloster and 2012 Accent to market this year.”
Each year AutoPacific analyzes the results of their New Vehicle Satisfaction Survey and identifies the top performing vehicles.  The Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are an industry benchmark for objectively measuring how satisfied an owner is with their new vehicle.
“While the economy is strengthening, new vehicle buyers continue to be especially careful in selecting the perfect vehicle for their needs,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.  “AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award will help this year’s customers sort through the 262 car and truck nameplates presently available in the United States.  A wise purchase decision is like money in the bank.”
Hyundai’s 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinder engines, dynamic design and luxury features offered with Hyundai’s strong value proposition. Sonata is also available in Turbo and Hybrid versions, with Hybrid achieving class-leading 40 mpg highway fuel economy.
The 2011 Elantra is one of Hyundai’s quartet of new 40 mpg standard highway cars, making Hyundai the only manufacturer with four models achieving 40 mpg on the highway.  The Elantra sets the bar in the compact sedan category offering a “class-above” midsize car interior volume, modern design, outstanding 40 mpg highway fuel economy, and loads of comfort and convenience features, all at an attractive starting price.
The 2011 Genesis brings consumers the award-winning Tau® V8 engine producing 385 horsepower, propelling the Genesis from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds.  The Hyundai Genesis is built on Hyundai’s performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture. With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, Genesis showcases features such as XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), Lexicon® audio systems and electronic active head restraints.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA AND HOPE ON WHEELS DONATE $10 MILLION TO CHOC CHILDREN’S

Largest corporate gift in hospital history will fund groundbreaking pediatric cancer research at Hyundai Cancer Institute
Fountain Valley, Calif. , 05/11/2011
Hyundai Motor America and its nonprofit organization, Hyundai Hope on Wheels, today announced a $10 million gift– the largest corporate gift in CHOC Children’s history. The gift will be used to fund groundbreaking pediatric cancer research, using the latest advances in genomic medicine to provide more effective, individualized treatment for children afflicted with this disease. CHOC Children’s is recognizing this gift by naming its cancer center of excellence the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children’s.
For more than a decade, the cure rate for pediatric cancer has been stalled at about 80 percent.  This research will focus on discovering cures for the remaining 20 percent by finding pathways of corrupted cells—or targeted genomic sequencing—and identifying specific drugs to attack cancer cells.  The research will also identify individual genetic pathways to assess risk factors in survivors who may be susceptible to other cancers and diseases.
The partnership marks Hyundai’s 13-year commitment to finding a cure for childhood cancer.  Since 1998, Hyundai and its dealers have been the driving force behind Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer while celebrating the lives of children battling this disease.  In the same manner Hyundai Motor America is committed to new thinking and new possibilities with their cutting edge vehicles, this same spirit of driving innovation by funding pediatric cancer research creates new possibilities for the thousands of children afflicted by cancer each year.
"We’ve found an incredible partner with CHOC Children’s, where breakthrough genomic research and individualized clinical care will move us closer to a world where no child dies of cancer,” said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
“Hyundai’s generous gift also supports the $125 million ‘Change CHOC, Change the World campaign,’” states Kim Cripe, president and CEO, CHOC Children’s. “The campaign aims to make Orange County, California one of the safest and healthiest places for children in the nation.”

A New Approach to Childhood Cancer
The multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary Hyundai Cancer Institute will help physicians and patients choose the disease management approaches likely to work best for the patient.  The Hyundai gift will provide the following:

• Develop a clinical research center for pediatric cancer, focused on the 20 percent of patients for whom traditional therapy is not working.
• Use CHOC Children’s approach as a Phase I pediatric cancer clinical trial center to provide the most cutting-edge treatment options.
• Develop a predictive model to understand the risk of future disease in the survivors of pediatric cancer.
• Develop strategic collaboration with academic researchers, genomic medicine technology industry leaders, biotechnology firms and pharmaceutical companies to bring the next generation of medicines to pediatric cancer patients.

“Nearly 900 medicines are in development for cancer treatment. Identifying the specific one that works on a child’s disease is the challenge,” explains Dr. Leonard Sender, M.D., medical director of the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children’s. “This generous gift will help CHOC use the latest basic genomic science and translate it to our patients at the bedside.”
“Every one of Hyundai’s over 800 dealers are committed to finding a cure,” said Oscar Leeser, Chairman of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Foundation and dealer owner of Hyundai of El Paso in El Paso, Texas. “This significant investment is our unified way of drawing a line in the sand against this terrible disease. No child should have to hear they have cancer.”
With this gift, Hyundai and its nonprofit organization, Hope on Wheels will have committed more than $43 million in donations to pediatric cancer research since the program began.
Hyundai’s donation to name the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children’s will be recognized on the 5th floor Cancer Center of CHOC’s new, state-of-the-art tower, set to open in the City of Orange in Spring 2013.  However, the Hope on Wheels grant research work will begin in June 2011.

HYUNDAI DONATES $1.5 MILLION TO ALABAMA EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama Furthers State Support During a Time of Need
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 05/11/2011
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) reinforced its commitment to the state of Alabama and its community with a $1.5 million donation to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund. The money will be used to provide aid and support to those that were tragically hit by the recent Alabama tornadoes that swept the state late last month.
“This is corporate citizenship of the highest order that has emerged in the time of our State’s greatest need,” said Governor Robert Bentley. “Alabama’s partnership with Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama has grown deeper through the years and has blossomed into a true friendship. While I am humbled, I am not surprised by the generosity of this fine company.”
“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone who lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy, and to all of our fellow Alabamians who lost their homes and all of their possessions,” said HMMA President and CEO, YD Lim. “We hope that our humble gift to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund, which is given on behalf of all Hyundai Motor Company affiliates, will help bring necessary supplies and relief to our fellow citizens as quickly as possible, and that it will provide a measure of hope and comfort to those who are suffering at this time.”
The purpose of the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund is to provide help to Alabamians who have exhausted all other avenues of disaster relief, such as FEMA, Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and any other disaster relief programs. The United Ways of Alabama will serve as the fiscal agent for the Fund. A board of directors will be created to allocate funds.

HYUNDAI MOTOR MANUFACTURING ALABAMA
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, headquartered in Montgomery, Ala., is an independent manufacturing operation of Hyundai Motor Company, based in Seoul, Korea.  HMMA currently produces the 2011 Sonata and 2011 Elantra sedans.  Hyundai cars and sport utility vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 800 Hyundai dealerships across North America.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA REPORTS ITS BEST APRIL EVER AND SECOND-BEST ALL-TIME MONTH

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA REPORTS ITS BEST APRIL EVER AND SECOND-BEST ALL-TIME MONTH

• Retail market share expected to hit a record 5.7 percent
• Elantra and Sonata each top 20,000 monthly sales – a company first
• Hyundai achieves best-ever 36.2 mpg corporate average fuel economy

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 05/03/2011
Hyundai Motor America today announced all-time record April sales of 61,754 units, up 40 percent compared with the same record-breaking period last year. For the year, total sales are up 31 percent, with retail volume rising 40 percent.  Sales to fleet accounts are down 45 percent for the year with fleet representing 13 percent of the total sales mix year-to-date and 11 percent for April.  Thirty-four percent of Hyundai vehicles sold in April achieved 40 MPG fuel economy ratings.

“April was another outstanding month for Hyundai,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president of national sales. “Our unwavering commitment as the industry leader in fuel efficiency with four vehicles achieving 40 MPG standard this year has helped overcome escalating fuel prices and drive our continued growth.

“Further, we believe our innovative Assurance Trade-In Value Guarantee program will take the uncertainty out of future resale values and bolster consumer confidence in our brand.”

April’s strong performance was led by the hot-selling Elantra that registered 22,100 units sold, up 129 percent from a year ago. Its Alabama sibling, Sonata, saw sales climb 17 percent over April last year resulting in a combined 71 percent of total Hyundai volume.  This marked the first time Hyundai sold more than 20,000 units in the same month of two different models.

Genesis’ sustained growth trajectory continued with a 17 percent sales increase over last year, representing the 22nd consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases for Hyundai’s first premium products. Hyundai’s flagship Equus continues its strong performance and has now exceeded 1,000 total sales since its December launch, continuing to out-perform its five percent retail share objective.
Hyundai continues its industry-leading approach to fuel efficiency data transparency, achieving an all-time record corporate average fuel economy of 36.2 MPG in April while selling 20,918 vehicles with 40 MPG fuel economy ratings.  “The 40-MPG Sonata Hybrid is now shipping in volume, and we’re seeing terrific demand for it,” said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO.  “Combined with record-setting demand for the 40-MPG Elantra sedan, which is outselling all other 40-MPG compacts by a margin of six-to-one, we’ve got confidence our approach of delivering large volumes of high-value, ultra-high fuel-efficiency vehicles is the best long-term solution to hit our national CO2 and fuel economy objectives.”
